What is Bridging? The goal of bridging is to increase mutual understanding and trust across divides. It creates space for productive conflict, deliberation, and cooperation by: Building Social Connectivity: Connecting diverse groups to reduce polarization. Facilitating Productive Deliberation: Prioritizing content that encourages meaningful discussion over conflict. Promoting Collective Intelligence: Integrating diverse perspectives to address complex issues more effectively.

How Top Comments Work Our auto-moderation system identifies high-quality comments that exhibit specific "bridging" attributes, such as:

  • Compassion
  • Nuance
  • Reasoning
  • Curiosity
  • Affinity
  • Personal Stories

The Filtering Logic When a comment is created, it is processed through a "High Quality Comment" pipeline that calculates a quality score. To qualify as a "Top Comment," it must:

  • Meet a minimum threshold score.
  • Be visible and published.
  • Be authored by a user who is not banned.

User Experience and Functionality

Default View: The "Top Comments" tab becomes the default view once there is a combined total of three Top Comments and Featured Comments. Content Order: This tab displays pinned comments first, followed by manually featured comments, and then "Top comments" "All Comments" Tab: All comments remain available and organized chronologically in a separate "All Comments" tab. Real-time Updates: Top comments do not populate in real-time; they appear when a user refreshes the page or a new user lands on it.

Set up and Management

  • Top Comments filtering can be enabled solely on the back end. This means the Top Comments tab won't appear in the comment section, but you'll still be able to filter by comments that moderation has highlighted as top comments.
  • To View Top Comments in the Moderation console - create a saved search using these filters
  • Manual Control: Moderators and staff can manually exclude specific comments from the "Top Comments" tab via the on-site moderation menu or in the moderation console

Language Support: Currently, Top Comments is only available for sites with English-language settings. Container Settings: Top Comments is OFF by default but can be enabled for new comments (it is not retroactive)

Reply Previews: There is a setting to show reply previews on Top Comments, which is OFF by default.
